419 scam
don't you love getting email from nigeria saying they will pay you millions of dollars? yeah, me too. here's a portion of my latest, this one from zimbabwe:

Let me introduce myself to you before i go further; I am MR.MARCELL DAMBA FREEMAN the SON of Late MR.DAMBA K. FREEMAN who was recently murdered in the land dispute in Zimbabwe. Before the suden death of my father, he foresees the looming danger in Zimbabwe and decided to make a deposite of his money woth of $22.3 Million (Twenty Two Million Three Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) in disgusie as consignment in a box with a security company. And he was forced to disclose this to me alone as his first son.

i got to thinking about these scams and found this site. this guy tries to scam the scammer. it's funny stuff.

other news headlines
hooray for Plan B. it's not perfect yet as it is limited for those under 18, who may need it most, but it's a step in the right direction.

bye bye, Pluto.

from ABC news
i looked up the story of AIDS in black america after watching the primetime special last night. that's powerful stuff. if you missed the show, read the article.

then i found the story of this MAN carried his mutated twin inside his body for 36 years.

tv
i'm not usually at all excited about the return of tv in the fall [with noted exception re: the x-files]. and, for the record, i'm not now.

but i am missing boston legal. can't wait for that to premiere. and i'm somewhat interested in this studio 60 and heroes. we'll see.

two separate strands of DNA
she's her own twin:

Lydia Fairchild couldn't prove her kids were her own through a simple DNA test. She fought in court to keep her children. Finally, doctors told her she had a rare disorder, chimera.

school is about to start
the little one* is all set and ready to go. and looking forward to it. i just finished [literally] my syllabi. so, technically, i am ready. i am not yet looking forward to it.

* she refers to herself as littler, or smaller, noting mentally that it is a relative term.

i'm still me
How Much Have You Changed in 10 Years?: You've Changed 44% in 10 Years

You've done a good job changing with the times, but deep down, you're still the same person. You're clothes, job, and friends may have changed some - but it hasn't changed you.

i cannot believe it
i have lost something really important. i choose to say misplaced, with the hope that it will turn up somewhere. the realist in me says that this will not happen, however. the apartment is so small, searching high and low doesn't take too long.

this sucks. i cannot believe that i have done this. yes, sometimes i am a bit messy, but organized, and never one to loose something so important. i always know where everything is. [insert some awful screeching sound here.]

did someone forget to tell me it was really monday?
cause this day has sucked. it started off wrong, and hot. i hate that.

then, once in my car, i discover the radio in my car doesn't work [see previous post].

after work i made a trip to the DMV [cause that's always fun.] when i renewed my registration online, they mailed me the card, but not the decals for the plates. and because they made a mistake, i had to go down there, wait forever in line, and pay a dollar.

then i decide to take my daughter shopping, just a quick trip into old navy. not even new stuff can curb the complaints. i wanted to take the clothes back, just for spite. [no, i didn't.]

i can't wait to see what happens next.

MASSIVE EMERGENCY
the radio in my car DOES NOT WORK. i cannot live like this.

how come no one has told me
about Dhoni Mighili in the Maldives. wow, what a paradise. an island that serves only 12 guests at a time. you can even book the whole island exclusively. the cost, you ask? right here.

oh, i also wouldn't mind a safari in the Serengheti.

best cities for singles
i was perusing the list, going to think up some smart remark about my town as to why it wasn't included. i didn't think it would be, nor do i think it should be. and then i found it! #39 is Norfolk (out of 40, last is Greensboro).

look at that 'Cost Of Living' rating, 39. that's next to last.
Perfect Date: The perfect date would be to go to another city, because there's nothing to do.

Singles Scene: It's terrible. The people here are usually in the military, and the places that you can go to are pretty crappy unless you're in the military. Or you're a frat dude.
that's the commentary listed! i'm not sure why Norfolk was rated so high (compared to all the other cities in the nation).

star trek fun
Yes, it is perfectly reasonable that Kirk had the know-how to make the gunpowder and put together the bazooka to defeat the Gorn. That's why he's the goddamn Captain. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Ensign Ricky are beaming down to the planet. Guess who's not coming back.

these are two of my faves. see all of them here.

this is a neat story
for the front page of the paper. certainly better than something about homicide or war.

Former sailor takes responsibility for $1 debt, 60 years later

The sailor was annoyed to find a parking ticket tucked under the windshield of his 1935 Ford Coupe, the one with the rumble seat, after taking his wife to the theater.

But a debt is a debt. William D. Fogarty, a Connecticut native who was stationed in Norfolk in 1946, headed to the post office and purchased a money order for the $1 fine, payable to the city police.

Fogarty put the money order in his wallet. And then he forgot all about it.

Until now.

tax free weekend
i went out today to purchase just a few things, taking advantage of the tax-free weekend here in VA. how much did i save? i'm not sure. in all fairness, i did not make major purchases, that's where the real savings would be.

receipt #1: $66.50 + $1.62 tax = $68.12
receipt #2: $21.17 + $0 tax = $21.17

again, i'm not sure what it would add up to. something tells me i saved about $5 anyway.

and speaking of taxes, how much is the tax on food, for crying out loud? i stopped and picked up a chicken sandwich on the way home. the subtotal on that receipt is $2.79 plus .32 tax. what happened to the .08 tax on food? and where is it all going? [but i guess that's another story altogether.]

teacher's pay
is now normal. did you know?
Public school teachers used to earn less than just about everyone else with a college degree. No longer ... Throughout the nation, teachers' hourly earnings rival the paychecks of accountants and engineers. As state employees in Virginia, teachers receive retirement and health benefits that surpass many professions in private business. Plus, teachers work almost two months less a year than most other college-educated workers ... The Bureau of Labor Statistics' National Compensation Survey, pegged the nationwide public school teachers' average annual salary at $46,629 in 2004. That was more than the average worker and $8,700 less than the average for all occupations requiring the equivalent of a college degree.
$46,629 is not enough. but it's certainly better.

self-esteem boost
even the most confident of women do sometimes feel, even if only for a brief moment, doubtful or a bit down on themselves from time to time.

this video of britney spears [though widely known as trash nowadays was once considered, and may still be in some circles, a very beautiful woman] will make you feel wonderful. it's hard to believe that people can even be that dumb. regardless of how much you are sick of britney, this is worth it, to make yourself feel good at the least.

bonus: ha ha ha.

atheist quotes
from here.

  • I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. - Stephen Roberts

  • The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one. - George Bernard Shaw

  • If God exists, I hope he has a good excuse. - Woody Allen

and my personal fave: I refuse to believe in a god that would send me to hell just for not believing in him. - Bob Snuka [via j-walk]

  • it's august
    how did that happen?
