what i really want for christmas
is a universal charger. i spent last night charging my cameras, phone, etc. before going out of town today.

wouldn't it be great if we had just one charger that worked for all our devices! what a wonderful world it would be.

ugly sweater parties
i had no idea these existed, or that they were 'all the rage.' the ugly sweater party seems like a great idea - i am only sad i have not been invited to one.

it seems that vancouver has been doing an ugly christmas sweater party for more than five years. other parties are not christmas-specific.

to host of these parties just may be my new year's resolution.

sign of the times
polaroid stops making its famous film.

ah, a break
i just read a book. a work of fiction. since starting the phd program [what seems like forever ago] i have no time to read for pleasure. although it was great to sit back and just read, the book itself was very strange.

i read choke by chuck palahniuk. i should have known it was gonna be wierd since it is from the author of fight club. i should have known it was gonna be wierd with the following opening lines: "If you're going to read this, don't bother. After a couple pages, you won't want to be here. So forget it. Go away. Get out while you're still in one piece."

wierd, indeed. i was warned.

pseudonym
my classmates, under pseudonyms:

the guy who likes sex workers
the guy in a band
the guy from state
the girl who drives 200 miles
the guy whoe likes theory
the guy who stood in bread lines
the girl who rocks like me.

file syncing
i'm trying out this dropbox program. hopefully it will allow me to sync my files in the manner i desire. i work on the home computer, the laptop, and off the flash drive. because of this, i have different versions of various documents and it drives me crazy!

per an earlier conversation with the guy from state,* i'm thinking about getting an external hard drive. between the articles i have saved and the pictures/music, i am not only running out of space, but also scared i will lose it all.

we'll see how the file sync goes. unless anyone else has a better idea?

* pseudonym.

27 years later
i've read about otis toole [go figure, right, i've read about tons of serial killers]. turns out he was responsible for adam walsh's death. adam is the son of john walsh who was murdered in 1981. his death inspired walsh to start america's most wanted.

i'm assuming that now there is some closure.

google news search
62,349 results for layoffs [on google, 12,000,000 results]
102,092 results for unemployment [38,600,000]
28,753 results for foreclosures [56,900,000]

i wonder how much worse it will get in 2009?

a riddle
You are riding on a beautiful white horse.
On your left side is a drop off.
On your right side are several ostriches being chased by a lion.
In front of you are four large gazelles that won’t get out of your way
And you can’t seem to overtake them.
Behind you is a stampede of horses.
What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation?

bailouts
AIG, Wall St., car czar... Bush is the socialist, it seems to me.

men's rights
i discussed men's rights in my sociology of women class, a part of which was this idea that a man should have the choice to relinquish all rights to a child if he so chooses (and not be responsible for child support). a student did a webpage on the topic.

the student, as well as many others, feels that the man should have the 'right to choose' since the woman has the right to choose. my question is this - would she, and others, agree if abortion was made illegal?

more bits
i was surprised a few years ago to find out that people around here still got their milk delivered to their doorstep. not anymore.

"Alan Shore and Denny Crane: Husband and Mad Cow." sniff.

Ill. looks funny when abbreviated.

leap second: this year will be one second longer.

ferguson is beating conan in the ratings. i thought i remembered hearing this before. i've been a conan fan for quite some time, but this i do believe. conan has been looking stale as of late. and now leno's doing primetime? nuts. [letterman wins that war every time.]

cat behavior
ever notice that your cat becomes 'lovie' or attentive when you are on the phone? this is because the kitty thinks you are talking to her, not realizing your conversation through the telephone.

my kitty does this when i am singing, too.

paper outtakes
"In 2007, several more military confrontations broke out in Mogadishu, primarily as a territorial dispute between Puntland and Somaliland, during which the capital and surrounding areas suffered bombings and ambushes directed at both prominent Somalis and armed forces members. Thousands were killed or wounded in the fighting and hundreds of thousands forced to flee their homes (ICRC Annual Report 2007: Somalia). In other areas of Somalia, conflicts occur as clans and militias are fighting for control of resources. For example, conflict remains in the region of Lower Juba, principally in Kismaayo, as it is the economic strength of this region, with access to fertile agricultural lands and close proximity to fishing and livestock."

bits
disappointing! that's what it is. i will miss boston legal.

the 8 year old boy who killed his father may have received 1,000 spankings. at such a young age, this is doubly tragic.

plaxico burress (giants receiver and beach native) is out on bail on charges of criminal possession of a handgun, after shooting himself in the leg. seems a crazy story, but let the NFL punish him, not the state of NY. this is not worth years in prison.

you made it down here?

what? you want a reward?
