bryan adams and jason aldean
i wasn't really sure who this jason aldean guy was, but i ran across these videos from CMT's crossroads (didn't know anything about that either). click here for the link. i have several things to say:

1- i had to investigate this aldean and after hearing some of his songs, i personally think his voice sounds much much better recorded (as opposed to live or acoustic).
2- having said that, he rocks with bryan adams. and if bryan adams thinks he is okay, then i do, too.
3- i have linked above directly to the 'heaven' video, but the others are certainly worth a listen.
4- ha ha ha bryan adams gets asked for freebird.
5- and the intro ads are for rob thomas. is the internet reading my mind today?

wingwoman
maybe this is the job for me. i mean, 30 bucks an hour! from craigslist:
You must be classy and dress well.

Beyond that you must be able to do 4 things: 1) start conversations with beautiful women; 2) after that, remain totally silent, unless spoken directly to, but smile and look friendly while the man you are "winging" orchestrates the social situation; 3) socialize and block any man or woman attempting to interfere with the man you are winging and any woman he is chatting with; and 4) end any conversation you are having instantly at the direction of the man you are winging.
nah, i could never remain totally silent.

related: also on craigslist, taxidemied hamsters for sale.

johnny depp
i've heard a few johnny depp rumors as of late (that he'll be in burton's alice in wonderland and a dark shadows movie), but after watching him on letterman last night, i have just one thought: he's weird.

madoff
bernie madoff has requested a 12 year sentence when he goes up against the judge next. their argument is that he has a life expectancy of 13 years. since when is an offender's life expectancy taken into account at sentencing?

ridiculous. and i don't think it will fly.

morning
i slept all the way til 6 o'clock today. wow.

whirlwind
things have been rather busy as of late, but i have not been very productive. i shall blame it on birthday celebrations.

i have set personal goals for this week - to really get cracking on studying for comps. this is something was i was productive at early this summer, but then focused on dissertation ideas instead. i need to get back to both.

instead, i have been trying to clean up my computer. it is severely overloaded. last week i went through every one of the pictures i have saved to file. this took days! i deleted over 600 pictures that were blantantly junk, getting the number of pictures down to a more managable 3700. in further efforts to procrastinate, i will be printing off pictures in the near future for the old-school type album. fun!

this kind of stupidity leads to outrage
in toledo, people are getting tickets for parking in their own driveways. see, it is illegal, apparently, to park on an unpaved surface, including your own gravel drive!

the comments to this story alludes to the fact that the ticket-writer in this case is trespassing onto private property. makes me wonder what happens, then, when they are attacked by a dog while issuing the ticket?

funny, i just read yesterday in the local paper a story about people getting tickets for parking on their front lawns [not the driveway]. mike gruss asked, "But the increased enforcement raises larger questions about why people have to park on their lawns in the first place ... is there simply not enough parking to go around?"

* thanks for the link. you knew i would find this ridiculous!

apparently a hail storm hit parts of new jersey yesterday that made the streets look like snow. so much hail that it coverd the ground 3-4 inches deep. these are strange pics showing people plowing the streets in shorts.

Webb to take on prison reform
Sen. Jim Webb is looking to "reshape America's entire criminal justice system."
With backing from senior Democratic senators and quiet encouragement from President Barack Obama, Webb will introduce legislation to create a bipartisan commission on criminal justice reform. Webb said he wants the commission to educate itself and then the American public on some little-understood realities about crime and punishment.

His bill reads like an indictment of the current system, noting that the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world, that minorities make up a disproportionately large share of prison populations, and that half of prisoners will return to prison within three years of release.

    ...

Webb's bill does not suggest specific reforms but directs the commission to make suggestions that would reduce incarceration rates and keep mental patients and nonviolent offenders from going to prison.

    ...

That crisis - particularly the nation's drift toward mass incarceration - "is dramatically affecting millions of lives, draining billions of dollars from our economy, destroying notions of neighborhood and family in hundreds of communities across the country, and, most importantly, it is not making our country a safer or a fairer place," he said.
    good luck Mr. Webb.

poor kitty: a case of animal cruelty
a cat named possum* somehow survived being shot 27 times with an air rifle. the link has photos that are disturbing, but the cat lives, so the story isn't that bad.

    * there is a cat named possum (not sure the spelling is the same) that lives in the apartment acrossed from me.

    have you seen this ad?

i am not sure if this campaign will be successful, but it certainly grabs your attention.

the AIDS Healthcare Foundation has "AIDS is DC's Katrina" on 60 bus shelters on street corners throughout Washington. "The ad, which AHF produced after the recent revelation that the HIV prevalence rate in Washington surged past 3% -- higher than the rate found in Lagos, Nigeria --, is intended to prod President Obama to act forcefully on AIDS."

    kia, don't quit me now
had an adventurous day after the car broke down in VA Beach. i had it towed to a repair shop there and my fingers are crossed.

update 06/09: something about a transactional sensor... it is being fixed.

correction: i had misunderstood the guy on the phone. it's the transaxle range sensor. shows how much i know. and she's all fixed up. $275 later.

    adult killer in juvie
this may be old news, but new to me. california has a man, 37, in juvenile custody. it seems that he was convicted in juvenile court of a sexual assault and murder years ago, when he was indeed a juvenile. he should have been released at 25, but the state has kept him, reporting that he is too dangerous for release. if he is so dangerous, though, is it wise to keep him confined with children?

    the new google
google has released a new search tool, google squared. it presents your search results in a table. since i love tables so much, i thought i would take a look. though it does pretty well with some things, i don't like it.

i'm not sure why you need an eyebrow shaver at school
    but regardless, this is insane!
A Pittsburgh-area school board has upheld the expulsion of a 15-year-old middle school student who was found to have an eyebrow shaver in her handbag during a random search early May.

The Penn Hills School Board on Tuesday voted 8-1 to uphold the expulsion recommended last month by officials at Linton Middle School. As a result, Taylor Ray Jetter will remain expelled for the rest of this year and 45 days next year.
zero tolerance has gone too far.
