ponies
Yes, today is the day. The infamous last Wednesday of July pony swim, or formally, the '79th Annual Pony Penning.' Crowds of about 50,000 people congregate at Chincoteague's Memorial Park to watch the ponies make their historic crossing across the Assateague Channel. After the swim, 'Saltwater Cowboys' will herd the ponies and their foals to the carnival grounds, where the baby ponies will be auctioned the next day. Proceeds benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Co.

Was I there? No. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen the ponsy swim, but I estimate about 15. Has my daughter seen it? No. Do I want her to more than anything? Of course, it is a part of my heritage. But good golly, that's a whole lot of people in a small area! I need a boat.

so now i'm conservative?
in today's opinion section of The Virginian-Pilot, there is an article written by a Chesapeake woman who declared that she was voting for Kerry because she was conservative. but let me quote her:
I want a strong president who will conserve the environment, conserve our military to act only when necessary, conserve our positive relations with other nations, conserve our Constitution as it is, conserve our spending and not run up a huge deficit, and conserve the basic principles of our republic- individual freedom, the opportunity for advancement and a government responsive and accountable to all the people.
Yee-hah E.M.!

this cartoon was also on the same page:

[i probably broke all kinds of copywrite laws on this, but i didn't intend it.  it's just good stuff!]

really?
found this via OTB:

'I Had An Abortion' T-shirts: 'Planned Parenthood is proud to offer yet another t-shirt in our new social fashion line: 'I Had an Abortion' fitted T-shirts are now available. These soft and comfortable fitted tees assert a powerful message in support of women's rights.'

to each her own, i suppose.

chincoteague makes news
yes, the bridge again...
worries are common among people who live or work on the 7-mile-long island famed for its annual pony swim. A 2003 Virginia Department of Transportation report said the bridges were in “poor” condition. They have up to 90 percent section loss in some areas – much of them are rusted and several gaping holes show through.

Sometimes, the 65 -year-old swinging draw bridge gets jammed open for hours, backing up traffic for miles and making it impossible for an ambulance to pass through on its way to a hospital about 45 minutes away on the mainland.

Transportation department officials say it could be five or six years before a new, longer bridge is finished. In the meantime, they say the Chincoteague Channel and the Black Narrows bridges are safe enough for the 9,000 cars that cross it daily.
[see the time on these posts, that's what I get for going to bed so early.]

once again...
The number of Americans under the control of the criminal justice system grew by 130,700 last year to reach a new high of nearly 6.9 million, according to a Justice Department report released today.

searching
someone found my site by searching for 'texmex huge tits short skirt.'

all i can say is why?

pass it on
Someone You Know is Gay is a grassroots effort to help more Americans recognize that they probably do know someone who is gay, and that discrimination hurts real people. Their slogan: 'People who know someone who's gay are more likely to think gays and lesbians should be treated fairly and equally.' That's great, but maybe people who think gays and lesbians should be treated fairly and equally are more likely to know someone who is gay... either way, pass it on.

the Jeopardy guy
jeremy freese makes a good point about the Jeopardy guy: 'however impressed we should be with this guy, we should be many times more impressed with the person who finally beats him. '

ha ha Bush
the FMA failed: 'The Senate delivered a sharp bipartisan blow today to advocates of a Constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage, blocking the politically charged initiative that has been a top priority of President Bush and conservative activists.'

not surprisingly, both [republican] senators from VA voted for it.

don't laugh...
but i have been listening to a lot of country music this weekend. why? i'm not sure. but i am finding it refreshing on some level. specifically, two songs have stuck in my mind:

'the way you kiss, the way you cry, the way you move when you walk by / there aint nothing about you that don't do something for me'

'they're all watching us now they think we're falling in love / they'd never believe we're just friends / when you kiss me like this / i think you mean it like that / if you do baby kiss me again'

btw- this week's free association is up.

40 years ago today
On this day in 1964, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law (to boost his poor record regarding civil rights, he finished what Kennedy started). This landmark law prohibits racial discrimination in public accommodations, publicly owned or operated facilities, employment and union membership, and voter registration.

Progress? See stats here.

In addition to helping end Jim Crow laws of the South, the Act did something else. Title VII 'prohibits private employers from refusing to hire or from firing or discriminating against any person because of race, color, sex, religion, or nation origin.' Interestingly, Southern congressmen tried to sabotage the bill by adding in gender. They thought that this would surely kill the bill. To their dismay, the bill was passed with the gender specification intact.

For more info: full text, full details/history of the Act, and deb posted the Census stats, too.

note: this was also the day that Thurgood Marshall, the first black Supreme Court justice, was born in 1908.

joy and pain
love deb. she does 'flashback friday' which usually is a list of songs on a particular topic. this week's is preceded with this: 'Heartache. Pain. Those two words describe the feelings associated with the ending of a relationship. Even the one who initiates a break up still feels some pain and a sense of loss. I mean you didn't spend all that time with and invest that much of yourself in a relationship with someone without feeling something when it ended. Right?'

you made it down here?

what? you want a reward?
