Mary Wollstonecraft
today is the birthday of Mary Shelley (1797). she was a novelist, most famous for Frankenstein.

this reminds me, though, of Mary Wollstonecraft, her mother. i wrote a paper in grad school on Mary Wollstonecraft, considering her one of the first female sociologists. in 1792 she wrote Vindication on the Rights of Woman, advocating equality of the sexes. in 1792! it was written after the French Revolution, a response to Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the French Revolution in France (1790). excerpts from my paper to give you an idea of who she was:

Wollstonecraft saw that not much was changing for women or the poor at the time of the Revolution, and she noticed that the majority of men seemed to think as Burke did. Burke saw inequality as the natural state of things, while Wollstonecraft said that “the present unequal distribution of wealth and...property in one small group of the population is corruptive of all strata of society and therefore inhibits improvement.”

To Wollstonecraft, there are no intrinsic differences between men and women ... The only differences between the two sexes are the lack of education of women, which is purposefully done by the men to keep them inferior. If women had the same educational opportunities as men had, then women could achieve men’s “intellectual and spiritual accomplishments.”

Mary took notice of ideology drowning women in domains such as sex and sexuality, marriage, social position, and society in general.
she married William Godwin in 1797, and died 11 days after giving birth to daughter Mary.

[quiz] The Birth Order Predictor: You Are Likely an Only Child

At your darkest moments, you feel frustrated. At work and school, you do best when you're organizing. When you love someone, you tend to worry about them. In friendship, you are emotional and sympathetic. Your ideal careers are: radio announcer, finance, teaching, ministry, and management. You will leave your mark on the world with organizational leadership, maybe as the author of self-help books.

what surprises me is that 35% have a favorable opinion of Cheney's job performance. what do they approve of? does anyone even know what he is doing?

64% - Percentage of the 2003 high school graduating class that went directly to college.

$74,602 - Average annual earnings of workers age 18 and over with an advanced degree. This compares with $51,206 a year for those with bachelor’s degrees, $27,915 for those with a high school diploma only and $18,734 for those without a high school diploma.

there's good stuff in here
around the net and thoughts of late:

Lena Baker, convicted in 1945 for shooting her boss and then executed, was pardoned. a man she worked for threatened to shoot her when she grabbed the gun and shot him in self-defense. she was black, her trial lasted a day, and she was convicted by an all-white, all-male jury. now, 60 years after her death, she is free.

i was already thinking about wardrobe [something i don't generally care much for, except now it is back-to-school time and i will be standing in front of 150 'kids' each day] and then i read this. i've thought about being young and teaching. do i dress like a 'teacher' or do i dress my 'age?' i always end up dressing like me, just without the flip flops [most days], which more resembles my age. students relate to me easier, especially considering the subject matter.

this is a really ugly dog. really ugly.

good ole bush is reading the history of salt [not actual book title, that is Salt: A World History] this summer. that's funny. like he has nothing better to do. not to mention a bizarre coincidence between salt and oil.

the BTK killer’s chilling methods heard in court today.

and someone found this page by searching for 'jessicas bedroom.' wonder what they were thinking?

insane for laptops
the Henrico County [Richmond] school system was selling Apple iBooks for $50 today and it became a violent stampede among county residents. this story is a must-read because it is hilarious. a snippet:
Jesse Sandler said he was one of the people pushing forward, using a folding chair he had brought with him to beat back people who tried to cut in front of him.

2008 may be more interesting
i was sharing this tidbit with a friend last night. thought i wold throw it up here in case you missed it, too. i admit that i have no idea of it's validity. Christopher Walken in 2008
'Our great country is in a terrible downward spiral. We're outsourcing jobs, bankrupting social security, and losing lives at war. We need to focus on what's important-- paying attention to our children, our citizens, our future. We need to think about improving our failing educational system, making better use of our resources, and helping to promote a stable, safe, and tolerant global society. It's time to be smart about our politics. It's time to get America back on track.'
chris walken is scary. i would so vote for him. :-)

speaking of tina turner
one of the absolute best songs ever recorded: better be good to me
and i really do wanna believe
but did you think i’d just accept you, in blind faith
sure babe, anything to please you

but you better be good to me
i just can't explain how great this song is.

[note: songs with which i have a similiar relationship - son of a preacherman and brass in pocket.]

republicans vs. democrats and the national debt
j informs me that i owe the government $26,611.64. that we all owe $26,611.64. according to the national debt. but i like the graph that j has posted. take a look at the national debt by president.

kitty c-section
Two teenagers performed a caesarean section on a dead cat, saving two of four kittens.

After discovering that the cat's body was still warm, they decided to try to save its kittens – even though neither of them knew how to do a caesarean section or had studied biology ... The teens said the experience in no way swayed them toward becoming doctors or veterinarians. Kim told the newspaper that she found the experience interesting but rather nauseating.

to my best friend
i've been meaning to share this thought with you, but keep forgetting. a song suggestion for you. listen to tina turner's 'what's love got to do with it.' i'm particularly found of these lyrics:
I've been taking on a new direction
But I have to say
I've been thinking about my own protection
It scares me to feel this way

What's love got to do, got to do with it
What's love but a sweet old fashioned notion
What's love got to do, got to do with it
Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken
seriously, listen to the song.

[quiz] What kind of a freaky mother are you?: Activist Mama.
Your kids have grown up on the front lines of rallies and pickets, and chances are that you boycott at least one company for its bad business practices. Your kids are learning what matters to you and how they can change what matters to them.
i don't know about all that. but she has held a picket sign.

beer for kids
a nonalcoholic brew aimed at children:
The Kidsbeer label captures a nostalgic mood as it was modeled after classic beer labels.

"Even kids cannot stand life unless they have a drink," reads the advertising catchphrase for Kidsbeer.
because we need to get kids drinking beer as soon as possible! if you ask me, this is terrible.

i took this quiz and my results showed that nicole kidman was the celebrity that matched my musical taste. i can't stand her.

it takes forever to cancel AOL
i did it today. i have had the service for about eight or nine years. let me tell you how much trouble i had to go through!

they offered me the service for 12 dollars less than i have been paying all these years. i declined the offer today, but it irritates me a bit to know i could have called before and been saving money all this time. they also told me that because i was a valued customer for so long, i could continue to get my email at aol.com.

bottom line: if you call to terminate your aol service, prepare and set aside about 30 minutes.

the band name of Eve 6 was inspired by an episode of the X-Files
the episode featured 10 clones of a girl named Eve. The 6th clone was a crazy psycho, hence EVE 6. so says the origins of band names .

i also learned that the rolling stones got their name from the muddy waters song 'rolling stone.'

it's that time again
the fall semester is nearing and i have begun to think about classes today. i have four classes in the fall, three sections of juvenile delinquency and one section of intro to crim. as of today, i have 150 students. i skimmed through the class lists and recognize at least ten former students. i know i have replied to countless emails from former students asking for overrides [but not yet granting any of them].

it is my goal tonight to think about this more and perhaps begin to, at least, organize a bit. we'll see how far i get...

note to self #252
boston legal is back with all new episodes starting tuesday, august 9 at 10:00.

i'm so excited.

another innocent man freed
from talkleft: 'It seems that a week rarely goes by without a new report of an innocent accused being cleared (after conviction) by DNA testing ...

Today's happy ending is about Thomas Doswell, who spent nearly 18 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit ... Doswell, of Homewood, was convicted in the 1986 rape of a 48-year-old woman at a hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 25 and the father of two young children when he was convicted ... Because Doswell truthfully insisted that he was innocent, he was denied parole four times.'
