actual lines from my PhD application essay
'We truly are waiting for the world to change. I am hopeful that change will occur, as it happened just a generation ago. In the 1960s, a new brand of thinking was born. A culture emerged that was in direct opposition to the older generation's values of decency. Young people were liberated, speaking of sex, drugs, and politics. By now, however, the sex has been had, the drugs have been taken, but a new era of politics is in store for us.'

i can pass 6th grade history
Are You a Dumb American?: You Are a Smart American

You know a lot about US history, and you're opinions are probably well informed.
Congratulations on bucking stereotypes. Now go show some foreigners how smart Americans can be.

not that i think it will happen, but here's an interesting thought
if hillary makes it for president, then we will have had bush, clinton, bush, clinton for 24 years. wow.

the "Grey's Anatomy" effect
"...doctor is the top career choice of teen-age girls, according to a new poll released Tuesday ... In the poll of 1,500 teens between the ages of 13 and 19, 10 percent of girls said being a doctor would be their ideal job, up from 8.3 percent in 2004. In 2004, businessperson was the top career choice of teen girls.

While we have no way of proving it, one might see a correlation between the rise of popularity in a medical drama like 'Grey's Anatomy,' whose target audience is young adult women...We saw a similar effect in 2004 when 'The Apprentice' was very popular during its first season. That year, businessperson was the top career choice of girls. It was the only year since we started this poll that businessperson was the top career choice of girls."
perhaps it is good that more young girls want to be doctors, but i am pretty sure the life of doctors, and interns, is not like it is portrayed on tv.

censorship is stupid
i am not shocked that parents are outraged at this, but it is disappointing. the book, "The Higher Power of Lucky," written by Susan Patron, intended for children ages 9 - 11, is on the verge of being banned.
The word “scrotum” does not often appear in polite conversation. Or children’s literature, for that matter. A Newbery-winning book has been banned from some school libraries around the country.
i'm thinking the first part of the [opening] line is worse than the use of the word scrotum. hey, that's just a body part. take a look:
"Sammy told of the day when he had drunk a half a gall on rum listening to Johnny Cash all morning in his parked '62 Cadillac, then fallen out of the car when he saw a rattlesnake on the passenger seat biting his dog Roy, on the scrotum."
emphasis mine. as my eloquent title suggests, this is stupid. kids aged 9-11 know far worse words than this.

GW golden coins released today

i have never received any kind of $1 coin during a money transaction. it would be neat to get one of these in my change.

these new coins do not feature the word 'liberty' and also have the 'in god we trust' on the side of the coin, as you can see here in this pic.

they will mint four presidential coins a year until 2016.

it's bitter cold outside
that is all.

free lunch
a london restaurant is offering free meals to models who show a card proving they are a size zero. while this may be a good idea, i doubt the offer will be taken up on. these models, who i am sure are making some bucks, aren't not eating because of a lack of money. i assume this restaurant realizes this and it's a publicity stunt.

where did i go?
sometimes i ask myself the same question. the lack of posts only reflects the fact that i have been preoccupied with all that's going on as of late.

things should return to normal after thursday, that's when the apps for the PhD program are due.

just thought i'd let that out.

pay it forward?
Terra Bite Lounge is a coffe shop with no prices on the menu. but not just no prices, they actually don't charge you. donations welcome, of course. you pay what and when you like.

i guess they are assuming that some people will pay more than the actualy prices, in a 'pay it forward' sense. i'm not sure if i would do the same, although i would certainly pay. i would pay just because i think it is a neat idea.

"It's kind of like a social experiment." indeed. i would love to see how this is going months from now.

good news
i have paid off my car! and early, may i add.

how exciting.

bathroom oasis

roto-rooter is holding a contest to win this contraption. it comes complete with a kegerator, an iPod, a pedal exerciser, a magnification mirror, a megaphone, a personal cooling fan, a USB powered coffee mug warmer, an Xbox 360, a TiVo, a Gateway laptop computer, a Philips 20" LCD Flat Panel TV and a Philips DVD player.

this is truly for the one who has everything. i'm only sad this won't even fit in my bathroom.

i'm sad i missed it
last night was dave letterman's 25th anniversary. here's a list of great 'Late' moments.

i don't agree with the order of the moments listed. but i can't argue that they are great moments, indeed. i'll never forget farrah fawcett on the show.
