not just a race issue
in a post titled, Hillary’s AIDS Lie, OTB said:
but i don't think so. i did not hear or read hillary's words and therefore risk taking the comment out of context. OTB said we are spending money so we are doing something. but i think hillary's comment is correct. not just about money. but about the outcry. preventative efforts aside,* more needs to be done about AIDS in america. i understand africa needs help, but so do 437,982 people here.
* the fact that we all learned that HIV and AIDS is preventable [you could even not have sex] may be part of the reason we don't "care" too much. but hillary's statement is still true.
In last night’s non-debate among Democratic candidates, Hillary Clinton got the biggest applause line of the night: “If H.I.V./AIDS were the leading cause of death of white women between the ages of 25 and 34, there would be an outraged outcry in this country.”the author points out that we are spending billions of dollars and that hillary's statement is false because of it.
She continued, “If we don’t begin to take it seriously and address it the way we did back in the ‘90s, when it was primarily a gay men’s disease, we will never get the services and the public education that we need.”
These are superb applause lines, well targeted to her audience. The insinuations behind them, however, are damnable lies.

new prison stats
this is the same first line that i used last year: the latest stats for prison and jail populations have been released. nothing new really, populations are increasing. in fact, this time it is the largest increase since 2000.
the nation’s prison and jail populations increased by 62,037 inmates (up 2.8 percent), to total 2,245,189 inmates, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics reported today.the press release is here.

ain't that the truth
"If it's true that our species is alone in the universe, then I'd have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little."

message to maryland- stop dumping your trash on us
Virginia ranks number two in states who get the most trash brought in (PA is number one):
The amount of out-of-state waste coming into Virginia is on the rise again, according to a report released Wednesday. Almost 7.3 million tons came to the commonwealth in 2006, with most of it from Maryland, New York and Washington, D.C. ...
Twenty-two states brought trash to Virginia last year, from Alabama to Wisconsin, Connecticut to West Virginia...
Virginia has tried in vain for years to curb trash imports. But the courts have consistently declared such proposed state laws as unconstitutional and in violation of interstate commerce protections.

the military's gay bomb
here's the original post i read:
Thirteen years ago, the U.S. Air Force had a plan, all based on one STRONG theory: It would be hard for an enemy soldier to fight us if all he could think about was the firm, powerful, manly... yet gentle... taboo touch of his fellow soldier.this is nuts. i wanted to look around to verify that this was right. perhaps i am behind on this one, but this is news to me! here's another source that reports it, from friday.
--So, in 1994, the Air Force considered plans for a GAY BOMB... a bomb that they'd drop on enemy forces that would, temporarily, make them OBSESSED with gay sex!!!
--The proposal for the bomb was created by the Air Force's Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio, as part of an effort to develop non-lethal weapons. The bomb would be filled with a chemical... they didn't say which... that would make soldiers attracted to each other.
--The lab asked for $7.5 MILLION to develop the weapon. The Air Force decided against developing the bomb, though, and turned down the proposal.

paris the slacker
i didn't want to say anything about this, but it seems i cannot help myself.
* don't think i am being unreasonably harsh. she is famous for having done nothing at all in the first place.
Due to an undisclosed "medical condition," Paris Hilton has been reassigned from jail to her home, where she will wear an electronic monitoring device.other sources say that the medical condition is that she is depressed. i can beleive that. it is jail, after all. isn't it funny that she once said wanted to prove that she can do the jail time. to learn from her mistakes. it seems that, by her own admission, she can't do anything.*

another reason i love the internet
because i so would have missed news like this. although feministing says they are late in posting this, it's better late than never.
the pic is "Beth Ditto's bare-it-all cover of British music mag NME [that] has got everyone talking." i have no idea who this musician is, but i love that the magazine published this photo.
one thought did occur to me, though, when reading about this. it's the same reservation as ann, would they put her on the cover with clothes on?
although she's still airbrushed, i'll bet leonard nimoy loves it.

cleared by DNA but no pardon
i wonder what is going on here. according to this article, it seems that Arthur Whitfield was released from prison in 2004, after serving nearly 22 years of a 63-year sentence for two rapes that happened here in Ghent in 1981. the DNA evidence pointed to another man.
he has since requested a pardon from the governor but has not received one. the article describes how his life has fallen apart, including the fact that he cannot find a job due to being a registered sex offender and he has lmimted skills after serving most of his adult life in prison. this is a sad story, for sure. if he is innocent, he should receive a pardon and be taken off the list so he can move on.
what am i missing? is there more to the story?

UCR has bad news again
The stats show a rise in violent crime [increased 1.3 percent nationwide] for the second straight year. There was a rise in big-city homicides while New York City, as I heard on tv this morning, is now the safest big city in America. Wow.
Locally, it's good news. Chesapeake is down 14%. Portsmouth dropped 4%. And, despite an increase in robberies, Norfolk's violent crimes fell by 1.2%.
Data from Virginia Beach was not included in the preliminary report, but police previously reported a 5% increase in violent crimes during 2006.

new uses for everyday things
for example, use newspaper to:
Deodorize food containers. Stuff a balled-up piece of newspaper into a lunch box or thermos, seal it, and let sit overnight.
Ripen tomatoes. Wrap them individually and leave them out at room temperature.
Keep the refrigerator vegetable drawer dry and free of smells. Line the bottom with newspaper.

nessie
in case you missed it, there new video footage of the loch ness monster. this footage is supposed to be the 'finest footage ever taken.' i haven't seen other film taken of the monster, but if this is the finest, uh oh.
maybe it is a hoax. maybe it's a dinosaur. maybe it is a real animal, something unidentified. but if people have seen it since the 1930s, that's one old creature.
