meteor or UFO?
i didn't see it, but apparently there were streaking lights in the sky last night. it was seen here in and north to maryland. the weather service, the Navy, Air Force and NASA all say they have no idea what it was. one person said she "saw something that looked like a comet moving low toward the ground; it was blue in front followed by orange and appeared to be the shape and size of a refrigerator. 'It was just so low. It was like where a bird should be,” she said. “It was definitely heading downward.'"

there was also a loud boom that caused some houses to shake. a sonic boom?

here, one tv station lists emails they received about the mystery light in the sky.

black and blue cars
considering that every car i've ever owned has been some shade of blue [and i do not live in CA], this will not affect me at all. but strange news it is! california to ban black cars. apparently, the paint color is not energy efficient.

companies have been working to make a less heat-absorbing black paint, but the best they can come up with is mud-puddle brown. eww.

has anyone watched the jimmy fallon show? i have not yet seen it, i am sure i will get around to it sometime. there are some times that i think he is hilarious. and then there are others.

i just learned of the eerie prediction from his grade school yearbook. "In my eighth-grade yearbook they put 'James Fallon Is Most Likely to Replace David Letterman."

that's making your dreams come true.

adorable photo of the day #31
we haven't had one of these for a while

no more death penalty in NM
New Mexico repealed the use of the death penalty and now joins fifteen other states (including DC) who do not utilize the punishment.

the governor, Bill Richardson, said it was the “most difficult decision in my political life.”

headline news in one place
i am loving this website that shows the front pages (with links) to 14 different newspapers.

city life
i have on numerous occasions seen an opossum walking through my building's grounds or crossing the street.

of course, this because i just saw one outside.

fun fact: did you know that opossum has more teeth than any north american land mammal?

blaming the victim
this is disgusting: "Nearly half of the 200 Boston teenagers interviewed for an informal poll said pop star Rihanna was responsible for the beating she allegedly took at the hands of her boyfriend, fellow music star Chris Brown, in February."

i'm not a big fan of berry scented candles
What Scent Candle Should You Light?: You Should Light a Berry Candle

You are creative yet down to earth. You have unique tastes, but you aren't snobby or picky. You crave new experiences. You enjoy unusual things even more once you can get your friends into them.

You're the type of person who's a trend setter and an innovator. You know what's fated to become popular. You find the world energizing and inspiring. For you, there's nothing like the thrill of discovery.

a woman's place
in the "semi-official" vatican newspaper is an article that argues that the washing machine did more to liberate modern women than anything else, including birth control.

i'm not surprised, really. the vatican wouldn't agree that birth control or working outside the home was liberating to women.

clooney on ER
so george clooney was on last night's ER. i was skeptical he would actually make it back. i thought the episode was done well.

either way, it's always nice to see him.

another day of standing in the cold trying to get into my car
again today it took me nearly an hour just to get my car door unlocked. i understand it is frozen as it is 15 degrees outside (wind chill is 4 degrees). even a blowtorch wasn't helping me today.

what i want to know, however, is why no one else is having this problem!

one in 31
a new pew reports states that one in 31 adults are in prison, jail, or on probation or parole. that's more than seven million people. also, those rates vary by race: 1 in 11 black adults, 1 in 27 Hispanic adults and 1 in 45 white adults are under correctional control.

and what state has the highest correctional population in the US? Georgia.

perhaps even more telling is the low percentage of funding that is allocated for probation and parole. no wonder the recidivism rate is high.

also consider that most people who go to jail or prison are released from jail or prison (in other words, most are not serving life terms). if we add this seven million people to the others who have already been released... goodness.

i'm a square
happy square root day.

how do you celebrate?

really? no one saw him in there?
John Waldo has been missing in FL, the good news is that police have found him. the bad news is that he is dead. but that's not the whole story: he was found dead in his car and that same car had received seven parking tickets.

i find it hard to believe that no one saw him lying dead in the car. tickets, tickets. i guess that is all that matters.

you made it down here?

what? you want a reward?
