a little money
the other day at the post office, the lady tried to give me five dollars extra back in change. i was quick to say to her, 'i only gave you a five, not a ten.' therefore, i made no money. i was honest. i've been in this situation before and was always honest. i returned a $100 bill when i was younger. i found a wallet once [it was void of money]. i gave it to the post office where i was told they would return it by mail for free.

my friends say that they would not be so honest. what would you do if you found a wallet? if you found money? or if you were accidentally given too much change?

Did you know that in the movie, Pulp Fiction, Jules' "Bad Mother Fucker" wallet actually belongs to Quentin Tarantino?

introverted sensing feeling perceiving
[quiz] My Bloginality is ISFP.

the first page that explains ISFP has a lot on it that does not apply to me. particularly: 'Many eagerly plunge into new fashions, avant garde experiences, 'hip' trends--some even setting the trends.' and 'Organized education is difficult for the majority of ISFPs, and many drop out before finishing secondary education.'

but this page is better: 'They're likely to be animal lovers, and to have a true appreciation for the beauties of nature... ISFPs have no desire to lead or control others, just as they have no desire to be led or controlled by others... The ISFP is likely to not give themself enough credit for the things which they do extremely well. Their strong value systems can lead them to be intensely perfectionist, and cause them to judge themselves with unneccesary harshness.'

what students will do
i have four 'introduction to criminology classes' this semester. last week while discussing various ways of measuring crime, students developed their own victimization and self-report crime surveys. questions like 'have you been the victim of a hit and run?' and 'have you smoked marijuana in the last 30 days?' each class came up with 25 questions of each kind and then answered them. though there were creative measures taken in each class, there was some overlap in the questions that were asked.

selected similarities between classes:

11:00 12:00 2:00 7:00

Victimization:
Rape 6% 9.4% 13%
Vandalism 33.3% 65.6% 47%
Stalking 24.2% 18.8%
DV 12% 25% 16.1% 18.8%

Self-Report:
Shoplifting 72.7% 84.3% 77.4% 75%
Hit and Run 42.4% 37.5% 9.7%* 37.5%
DUI 56.2% 71% 50%
Sold Drugs 18.8% 38.8% 18.8%
Vandalism 45.5% 43.8% 46.9%
Used MJ 25% 42%
MJ – month 25% 42% 21.9%

*this was limited to on-campus

update 01/26/05 at 9:10 am: i realize that my table didn't work out. sorry about that. maybe i'll try to fix it later.

Saturday, January 22, 2005

i can't wait for sunday
it's true. you 'can't question the eagles anymore.' and it's supposed to snow like crazy [in philadelphia, not here]. this might make for a really good game.

hjntiy: part five
he's mean to you. yells at you. is abusive. this is an easy one, even for me. lose the loser.

well, that's the end of the book all in all, it was very entertaining. i think the lesson is that we should not settle. find the man who likes us for who we are. and treats us with respect. gee, thanks, but i already knew that. employing that philosophy is more difficult. i'll work on that. thanks to greg and liz for the humorous reminders.

now that that is over, [a different] greg will be no longer confused.

we get a half inch of snow yesterday afternoon and the world shuts down. the kid has no school again.

i think it has something to do with the most expensive inauguration in history.

i read like a book
[quiz] Do You Have a Type A Personality?: nope, i'm type b+
You're a pro at going with the flow. You love to kick back and take in everything life has to offer. A total joy to be around, people crave your stability.

While you're totally laid back, you can have bouts of hyperactivity. Get into a project you love, and you won't stop until it's done. You're passionate - just selective about your passions.

Labels:

hjntiy: part four
the problem? committment-phobia. when he says he doesn't want to get married [for whatever reason, timing, fear, money, etc.], he's 'saying he doesn't want to get married to you' [page 79]. this chapter actually bugged me a little. marriage is a bit of a touchy topic. you have to read it and make your own decisions on this one. the authors are not debating the insitution of marriage, but rather making the point that if it is important to you, then he should feel the same.

next topic: he disappeared. 'he's made it clear that he's so not into you that he couldn't even bother to leave you a post-it' [page 108]. this is one that i have a problem with. cause there's no answer. no break-up. no excuses. nothing. this is the worst. greg, though, offers simple advice: 'no answer is your answer' [page 110]. don't call him. don't give him the chance to reject you again. still, this is the worst.

Labels:

hjntiy: part three
know where your relationship stands.

at the end of chapter three, liz admits that she hates talking about her feelings. scared to talk about the status of your relationship? then your left wondering, hoping, getting excited and then disappointed. i know this one all too well. 'i don't want to spend a lot of energy suppressing all my feelings so i appear uninvolved. i want to be involved' [page 43].

'if a man is not trying to undress you, he's not into you' [page 47]. in other words, if he was into you, he would want to have sex with you. if a man dumped a woman because she wouldn't have sex with him, we would call him an ass. but can a woman dump a man because he won't have sex with her? i've actually thought about this. the authors say yes, do what needs to be done to make yourself happy. i guess you should, even if that makes you an ass. actually, they say to buy a puppy for cuddling and find that special someone out there who 'does want to have sex with you' [page 57]. read this for yourself.

google search
this is funny. someone found my site with this google search: steal a penguin.

what are we going to do with it once we have it?

hjntiy: part two
'men know how to use the phone.' this is my favorite chapter. greg points out that it is crazy to believe that sometimes men are just too busy to call. he says that men, like women, like to be happy and are comforted by talking to the girl they are into. 'if i were into you, you would be the bright spot in my horribly busy day' [page 23]. therefore nothing would stop him from calling. and it's so easy with cell phones and all. i mean, everyone takes a bathroom break!

the lesson: when he says he will call you tomorrow, and then apologizes that he didn't because he was too busy, he might just be lying. cause there's no such thing as too busy to call. how do you know when they mean it? 'you know they mean it when they actually do what they said they were going to do' [page 27]. this makes sense, don't we want a man who keeps his word?

'he should respect and care for you enough to call you, if only because he knows that it will make you happy' [page 29]. this is what i think, too! but it is hard. maybe he was busy. liz chimes in that sometimes we think 'i like him so damn much that i'm willing to be patient and see how it all turns out' [page 31]. again, we are supposed to stop making excuses for him. he is hurting our feelings and we are better than that.

Labels:

hjntiy: part one
the bottomline of the book:

'when a guy is into you, he lets you know it. he calls, he shows up, he wants to meet your friends, he can't keep his eyes or hands off of you, and when it's time to have sex, he's more than overjoyed to ablige.' [page 5].

greg knows guys, cause he is one [which he does point out!]. he knows the guy that we are dating. he knows there are reasons why he can't be with us. he knows he is tired from work, coming from a bad relationship, stressed about money. blah blah blah. the man you are dating is a 'man made up entirely of your excuses' [page 7].

greg says what we [as women] should not do is call him. let the guy call you. 'when men want you, they do the work' [page 17]. i was thinking that this is ridiculous. we are liberated! but then again, he may be right. he would have called if was interested.

stayed tuned for part two: men know how to use the phone.

he's just not that into you
i know mom was waiting for this. she bought me this book for christmas. i have put off reading it, i think on purpose on some unconscious level. but now i have. and now i will talk about it.

this is a good book. seriously. it is humorous and easy to read. in a series of posts titled 'hjntiy,' i will pick out the main points and share them with you. as a way of spreading the dating advice. i strongly recommend reading the book for yourself, however. it's really funny and my cliff-notes version will not be doing it justice. stay tuned, part one tomorrow.

evolution is a fact
how about this:

A federal judge Thursday ordered a suburban Atlanta school system to remove stickers from its high school biology textbooks that call evolution "a theory, not a fact," saying the disclaimers are an unconstitutional endorsement of religion.

"This is a great day for Cobb County students," said Michael Manely, an attorney for the parents who sued over the stickers. "They're going to be permitted to learn science unadulterated by religious dogma."

city stickers in norfolk
i was just almost given a ticket for a non-existent law. the city of norfolk passed a law no longer requiring the display of city stickers [decals] on your windshield. the cop told me i needed a 2005 city sticker. i said, "i thought we didn't need them anymore."

he said i did. then he admitted that wasn't sure and let me go with a warning. i asked him if i could just call the police and ask them what the law was. he responded with "i am the police." i then pointed out to him [politely] that he didn't know.

well, i looked it up. decals are no longer required. and even if that wasn't the case, i'd have until february 15 to get a 2005 one.

it's still not ok to be gay
it's not just tinky winky anymore. everyone's gay.
i found this article via echidne.

A pro-family group is accusing homosexual activists of using popular children's TV characters to indoctrinate young children into their lifestyle. Specifically, the group is questioning the intention of a new children's video featuring those characters.

SpongeBob SquarePants, Barney the Dinosaur, Arthur, Dora the Explorer, JoJo, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Big Bird, Bob the Builder -- those and many others are among the characters starring in a music video remake of the 1970s song "We Are Family" that is designed to promote diversity and tolerance in the classroom.

A special DVD version will be distributed to 61,000 public and private elementary schools nationwide, along with lesson plans for teachers. Distribution of the DVD is being donated by FedEx.

Ed Vitagliano, a researcher for the American Family Association, questions the motives behind the project. The problem, he says, is that it is an "open door" to a secondary discussion of homosexuality. [emphasis added]
isn't this a good thing? i'm a bit confused. promoting diversity and tolerance is okay, as long as it's not about homosexuality. what kind of tolerance is okay?

though i have not seen the video, i think it is a good idea. but who even likes barney anymore?

the littlest things
this is one of those things. ready? i despise the 'post office will not deliver without postage' square on an envelope. i mean it, i hate it. it's not enough that i see them on my own bills every month, but since i do the bills at work, i see many more than the average person. and i am offended every time. how stupid do they we are? we all know that you need postage to mail something.

what's even worse is the 'place stamp here.' jeez. i wonder if anyone would be offended if i put a stamp in the opposite corner. i bet it would still get delivered. hey, i'm a nonconformist.

some stuff i've noticed
uncommon goods has some cool stuff. i want this when i get $3000.
dee reminds us not to drunk dial. always good to remember.
i've just discovered acidman. he's playing word games. cool. i think he means ubiquitous.
jfw is back. hooray.
how dumb is this?
a blog you might like [especially if you are into comics and stuff]. i especially like when he was talking about just shoot me. man, i love that show.

and i saved the best for last. you have to see this. i'm gonna link it like crazy for a minute. i want everyone to know. this guy has figured out who really killed john lennon. really. you'd never guess it was steven king.

virginia weather
what's going on here? last week i drove in a snowstorm and today it is 70 degrees.

films in 2004
the best movies of 2004.

EW has their list: Sideways, Million Dollar Baby, The Incredibles, Maria Full of Grace, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

msnbc has a list: The Aviator, Before Sunset, Blind Shaft, Fahrenheit 9/11, The Incredibles

roger ebert says: Million Dollar Baby, Kill Bill, Volume 2, Vera Drake, Spider-Man 2, Moolaade

cnn reports: Finding Neverland, Ray, Kinsey, The Aviator, The Motorcycle Diaries, The Incredibles

i have seen only four movies on these lists, one of which i would completely disagree that it should be on any 'best of 2004' list. that movie? spiderman 2. i just don't think it should be here. the best? nah.
where's shrek 2 and the butterfly effect? maybe this movie wasn't one of the best, but it was the film that surprised you most in 2004. and shrek 2, though maybe not the best of 2004, broke sales records all over the place.
i want to mention that sideways was on everyone's top ten list. what is this movie?
and i've never heard of million dollar baby.

these movies will have to be on my 'to rent in 2005' list. have you heard? blockbuster has no late fees.
