this is insane
people are willing to pay thousands of dollars for something that they have no clue what it is. only on ebay.

the bidding has surpassed $7,000 for a mystery envelope.

left vs. right
[quiz] Are You Right or Left Brained?: You Are 65% Left Brained, 35% Right Brained
The left side of your brain controls verbal ability, attention to detail, and reasoning.
Left brained people are good at communication and persuading others.
If you're left brained, you are likely good at math and logic.
Your left brain prefers dogs, reading, and quiet.

The right side of your brain is all about creativity and flexibility.
Daring and intuitive, right brained people see the world in their unique way.
If you're right brained, you likely have a talent for creative writing and art.
Your right brain prefers day dreaming, philosophy, and sports.
i can't argue with that one.

i think that one of these three things can go on just about anything [not together, of course]: sour cream, ranch dressing, and peanut butter.

2-20 was a bust, but 2-22 came through
i knew it would be a good day. i started the day out with a doctor's appointment, but it went well. i was very busy at work today [plus i got a major government grant out the door]. but what could brighten my mood so? allow me to explain: at the shelter, a board member delivers us lunch about once a month. lunch for the staff, to show their appreciation. not a bad idea, though i know it is just something these rich people do to make themselves feel better. but it is nice. usually, these lunches take place on fridays. i always miss these lunches since i teach on fridays. no big deal. today, my boss informed me that she had schmoozed a lunch on tuesday so i could enjoy it, too. that was great. just one of those nice little things people do for each other that makes you feel all warm and tingly.

on a different note: it was not my first, nor my last, but i had to deliver a 'lecture' to my child tonight. this week's discussion: on taking her time and putting forth effort in school. each week, she brings home a folder with various tests and assignments they have been working on. tonight, her grades were bad. lots of Cs, which is unusual for her. i gave her the 'i know how it feels cause i was there, too' speech.* all the stuff she has learned so far, she knew and therefore had to put forth no effort. this is new stuff. and she has to try. probably even just a little [since she is so smart and all]. specifically, her downfall was the water cycle. for those of you who do not know, the child is in second grade.

it's still a good day. i felt she was really listening. this is good. and our bellies are full of IHOP pancakes. just what i need to get the midterms graded and new statistics on probation and parole. [the agenda for tonight.]

and to cheer anyone up who is not as content as i: visit sorryeverybody.com : americans apologizing for reelecting bush to a second term [thanks to my student, brandi, for the link].

* of course, little does she know my example came from 10th grade chemistry. but that's not the point.

cause i don't wanna clean
what we are up to this saturday:

  • we had grilled cheeses and grapes for lunch. i made pasta salad [in the fridge] and muffins are in the oven.

  • i have been fighting with the camera.

  • my friend has been in florida and will return tomorrow. i know she has monday off, so it's my job to keep her entertained with a quiz.

[quiz] What Gender Is Your Brain?: Your Brain is 53.33% Female, 46.67% Male
Your brain is a healthy mix of male and female
You are both sensitive and savvy
Rational and reasonable, you tend to keep level headed
But you also tend to wear your heart on your sleeve
  • the democrats have a Social In-Security Calculator so you can see how much you will lose under Bush's new plan. i lose about $5,500 as of now. [via DNC]

  • UPDATE at 3:54pm: here's more:

  • sabrina has gone to stay with her friend again tonight.

  • i decided to see if the cat would be interested in catnip today [she's not usually]. we have watched her roll around in the floor for the past hour. it's hilarious.

i like my men to look unhealthy
Study: the Pill Changes Women's Taste in Men
Psychologists at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland asked 1570 young women on oral contraceptives and 1325 women who were not, to choose between healthy and less healthy male faces. All women preferred the healthier face on average but those on the Pill were significantly more choosy. "Women using oral contraceptives expressed stronger attraction to apparent health than women not using oral contraceptives," the researchers reported in the Proceedings of the Royal Society.

Women, they suggested, may have evolved strategies -- triggered by raised progesterone levels -- to reduce the risk of infection disrupting development of the unborn baby when their immune system is weaker than normal.
look how smart women are. and we don't even have to think about it. we just know. more info here. [thanks kathy.]

    pop music
the latest news, for anyone who might care [i don't] is that George Michael has said farewell to the world of pop music. his reasoning is that 'nobody wants to hear about politics, or any kind of strong ideas in pop any more.'

it is true, we don't have music with a message anymore. remember songs like Blowin' in the Wind (Bob Dylan ), Revolution (Beatles), Fortunate Son (Creedence Clearwater Revival), Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud (James Brown), Gimme Shelter (Rolling Stones), and I Shot the Sheriff (Bob Marley)? even Fast Car (Tracy Chapman) and Keep Ya Head Up (Tupac).

sure, there may be a song every now and then with a message, but we have lost it as a whole. granted, many of the songs of the 60s protested war and demonstrated the general social unrest at the time. but do we still not have war? social unrest? where's the message?

    three things to see
    sometimes. life. sucks.

    so now i'm liberal
liberal: adj. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.

a student turned me on [again] to ratemyprofessors.com. the entries are nice as everone liked both me and the class. however, a warning was given [to other students] that i was very liberal. now i make no accusations to the contrary, but it is hard to even appear as anything but a liberal when discussing the problems in the criminal justice system. or issues of poverty and a lack of healthcare in society. just because you care about social problems does not automatically make you liberal. does it?

You Know You're From Virginia When...
    Speed limits are just suggestions.
You have at least two friends who have no idea what their relatives do...because its "top secret" government work.
When people ask where you're from, you tell them DC because its easier to explain.
You've never told someone you're from Virginia without putting "northern," "central," or "southern" in front of it (See above).
It's not actually tailgating unless your bumper is touching the car in front of you.
You know yellow light means at least 5 more cars can get through. (Yeah, man...at least. Probably also happens everywhere else.) A red light means 2 more can.
You actually know what the black boxes at stoplights are for.
Despite the fact that Virginia fought for the south in the Civil War, you are not, under any circumstances, a "southerner."
You are amazed when you go out of town and the people at McDonalds speak English.
An inch of snow and you miss 3 days of school.
All the potholes just add a little excitement to your driving experience.
    Crown Victoria = undercover cop.
For the cost of your house, you could own a small town in Iowa.
If you stay on the same road long enough, it will eventually have three new names.
You have to dial the area code to call your neighbor.
"Vacation" means spending a day at King's Dominion or Busch Gardens.
You have never been served tea without the waitress asking "sweet or unsweetened?"
"Going to the beach" means anywhere from Ocean City to Virginia Beach to Myrtle Beach.

    * i am going to add one: you can't show your underwear. what a crock.

    * i just noticed that there is one place in VA that is rated the best rural place to live in the country.

    the dumb 'holiday' is approaching
[quiz] Are You Romantic or Realistic?: You Are A Romantic Realist
You tend to be grounded when it comes to romance. Sure, you can fall hard... but only for someone you've gotten to know. And once you're in love, you can be a total romantic goofball...
But you'd never admit it to your friends!
yesterday, my daughter told me of how her teacher mentioned that valentine's day wasn't a holiday. i could tell this surprised her, but i had to agree. perhaps i'm bitter because nothing special ever happens in my life on valentine's day. the year before last i exchanged [very late] christmas gifts with a girlfriend and the kids. last year i took my daughter out to dinner [i decided i would try to be normal]. though i am dating someone this 'holiday,' i have to work all day on monday. so this year is out, too.

    it was a good game
they lost. they made mistakes. it's okay. the world is still turning. the eagles came closer than anyone expected them to. no one can say that new england stomped all over us. nope, they sure didn't. 24-21.

there is a bright side. after such a great season and an appearance in the superbowl, people will have to take the eagles seriously. we'll be back.

    GO EAGLES
this is exciting. it's time for me to get off the computer and party to support my team. i'll leave you with this:

'Not only did the Patriots and Eagles give up the exact same amount of points in 2004 (260), but over the last four years, the rivals had the exact same record -- 48-16. If that isn't proof at how evenly matched this game is, I don't know what is. '

i thought i was the only one
who had a strange 'relationship' with 11:11. apparently not. i see 11:11 on the clock more often than any other time. i see it everyday. sometimes twice a day. it started to freak me out just a little. like sometimes i cannot escape it.

some say you make a wish at 11:11. i have never heard this, nor have i done it.

i've heard that at this time a portal to the otherworld opens up, but no-one knows where it is. man, i've got to find that. i may be missing out on something huge.

    the zebra and the lion
i mentioned yesterday about the zebra that jumped in the lion's exhibit and almost became dinner.

i found the story. both of these animals have a checkered pasts: 'In October, Zeke, right, a 4-year-old Grant’s zebra, is thought to have chased a rhino into a moat, where she drowned. In July 2002, Kalisa, left, a 6-year-old African lioness, killed a female lion over a wild duck.'

they are getting rid of the zebra.

    twenty-six
[quiz] What Age Do You Act?: You Are 26 Years Old
Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.
this sucks cause i am 26. i guess it will be interesting to take this quiz again in a few years.

    the news is always ugly
teen claims antidepressant led to murder - was it the drugs? or is this an excuse for a horrible crime?
A teenager who shot and killed his grandparents as they slept is "a shy, decent boy" who was led to kill by the antidepressant Zoloft, his attorney said as the boy went on trial... Christopher Pittman, now 15, is being tried as an adult for two counts of murder in the November 2001 slayings of Joe and Joy Pittman with a pump-action shotgun. Their house was set ablaze and the youth, then 12, drove off in the family car.
bill banning death penalty for juveniles gets tabled - of course it did. this is virginia!
21 Virginians have been executed since 1787 for crimes they committed as juveniles, three of them since the U.S. Supreme Court re-instituted the death penalty in 1976.
Medicare to cover Viagra - but not birth control. this doesn't make sense.

one more: i can't find the news story yet, but there was havoc wreaked in the Norfolk Zoo today. the zebra jumped in the lion's exhibit and almost became dinner.
