another state to end capital punishment?
Abolish the Death Penalty turned me on to this story. it seems that North Carolina has proposed, by 'only the narrowest level of approval,' a moratorium on the death penalty. i noticed the local tv news website is running a poll. question:
Should There Be A Moratorium On The Death Penalty?
the results show that 77% of voters said yes.

social problems
i was having a conversation with a friend where we were vaguely discussing politics, specifically the war. one of my biggest problems regarding that subject has always been the fact that there are so many problems at home. it is my opinion that we should focus on fixing the problems within our country before we try to fix the rest of the world. in this great superpower in which we live, there is no reason for the following:

• 15% of our children living in poverty
45 million americans not having healthcare
• some stats show 20% of people in this country are functionally illiterate
homelessness - don't get me started...

happy memorial day
no school. no work. yipee.

i will not hold my breath
Hillary for President? The majority of respondents in this poll would vote for Clinton. So who, according to the poll, would vote for her? Young, poor women. Gee, we don't have any of those in this country!

The article says that there was a big gender gap [six of 10 women but 45% of men were likely to support her], significant differences by age [two of three voters under 30 were likely to support her, compared with fewer than half of those 50 and older] and the strongest support from those with the lowest income [sixty-three percent of those with annual household incomes of $20,000 or less were likely to support her, compared with 49% of those with incomes of $75,000 or higher].

Interestingly: Among those surveyed, 54% called Clinton a liberal, 30% a moderate and 9% a conservative.

i'm still here*
Wildlife agents on Thursday evening began killing sea gulls that have created a safety hazard for motorists by nesting on the south island of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.
Wildlife managers say they will follow up the shooting by coating gull eggs with vegetable oil which suffocates the chicks before they hatch.
* in case you were worried. things are very busy here. perhaps i'll fill you in later.

this is amazing
talkleft brings us this story of a blogger who writes earlier in the day about letting his sister's ex-boyfriend into the house. it turns out that both he and his sister were murdered that day. police found the blog post and have arrested the guy.

can i borrow one of those girls?
last night sabrina had a friend sleep over. yesterday, while returning from the park, a man who lives downstairs of my building stopped us while we were walking up the stairs.

'can i borrow one of those little girls?'

'for what?' i responded.

i figured it out as soon as i looked over at him. he was standing outside his open apartment window. he had locked his keys in. the window was large enough that it was no problem for one of my eight-year-old girls to slide right in. and sabrina did, with ease.

must have swivelsweeper.

i'm being invaded
trot on over to the photo journal and take a look at what is invading my house. for right now, it's just in the plant. but should i remove it? or let it grow until take it takes over my enormous kitchen and then oozes down the hall until it sucks us up from our beds at night?

sabrina says it was there last year, but i don't recall it. nor do i remember what i did with it then.

something to see, something to do
i have shared this with a few people, but i want to make sure everyone sees it. it's a funny video clip: karaoke for the deaf.

hit google's 'i'm feeling lucky' button with this search phrase: 'french military victories.' it gets you to a page asking you if you meant the alternative provided [which is, in itself, funny]. clicking that then takes you here. very interesting. [via.]

i didn't see it, but read bitter little man's recap of the finale of enterprise.

i just heard this on the radio
surprising news: Renee Zellweger and Kenny Chesney get married

they met in January.

i was going to let this slide
without a post, but i just can't do it. there's a study recently released that has come to the grand conclusion that having sex before you’re 18 makes you more likely to be poor and divorced.
The study found that 20 years after the initial data collection men and women who had reported being virgins at age 18 were about 50% less likely to be divorced, had completed one additional year of formal education and had annual incomes about 20% higher than people who were not virgins at age 18. The study also found that women who were virgins at age 18 were half as likely to receive government assistance and more likely to have a positive financial net worth than women who reported having had sex by age 18.
jessica over at feministing has pointed out that that the people who wait to have sex also don’t get divorced because both decisions are affected by their religions.

i was thinking along the lines of delaying instant gratification. those people who can delay the desire to have sex in high school may also be the same people who can delay hasty decisions in life that may lead to divorce and dropping out of college.

new death penalty study
more bad news...

a comprehensive study covering 20 years and thousands of capital cases in Ohio:

  • Offenders facing a death penalty charge for killing a white person were twice as likely to go to death row than if they had killed a black victim. Death sentences were handed down in 18% of cases where the victims were white, compared with 8.5% of cases where victims were black.

  • Nearly 1/2 of the 1,936 capital punishment cases ended with a plea bargain. That includes 131 cases in which the crime involved two or more victims; 25 people had killed at least 3 victims.

  • In Cuyahoga County, a Democratic stronghold, just 8% of offenders charged with a capital crime received a death sentence. In conservative Hamilton County, 43% of capital offenders ended up on death row.

  • in short, Ohio's death penalty has been inconsistently applied since it was enacted in 1981.

    an update
our stuff is all moved into the new apartment (however, very little is put away yet). i am having major problems with getting the phone turned on, so that explains the lack of posting. something about they have to program the phone jacks inside the apartment to my number. i have never heard of this before, and it will cost me about $250. so, yeah, for now, we are without phone.

this situation sucks, especially cause i have lots of pictures.

    you made it down here?

    what? you want a reward?
