girls are smart
if there are enough new stories like this one, maybe people will start to believe us.

the study says that countries with gender equality produce girls who are better at math.

AC
i'm in the library today. here, the AC is on and it's very comfortable and i can use the computer [referring to the previous post]. i'm reading through current issues of crim journals to get a feel for what is being talked about in the world of criminology and to stimulate new ideas for me. so far, nothing has jumped out at me.

police, gangs, parental monitoring, sex offenders, school crime. all the same old stuff...

air and space
there's an air quality alert today. pollution levels are high. never heard that one before.

my computer sounds like it's going to explode when i turn it on. given how hot it has been [currently, it's 80 in here], i've just left it off.

the dmv doesn't even want to see you
here in virginia, i noticed the dmv is discouraging the use of their "customer service centers" and are encouraging business be taken care of via the internet. from their homepage:
Beginning July 1, 2008, customers are urged to avoid renewing vehicle registrations (decals) in Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) customer service centers (CSC) where a $5 service fee will be added under a new Virginia law.
i do have to renew my registration. too bad i have to go to renew my license as well.

random things: pot and polar bears*
  • this author's experience leans to the fact that marijuana is pretty much legalized for anyone over 18 in california with no harmful consequences. but, then again there's all those people in jail.

  • legislatures are looking to hire a few good scientists to buy research "to undermine the public perception of a widespread consensus among polar bear researchers that warming global temperatures and melting Arctic ice threaten the polar bears' survival." i'm not making this up; they said it: "We want to have the money to hire scientists to answer the Interior (Department) scientists." [emphasis mine.]

    * i have no idea hwo these things go together or how they even caught my eye today.

    barbara walters
with all the talk about her, it occurred to me today that barbara walters is one of those people who are referred to by both first and surnames. it's "barbra walters" just like it is always "harrison ford."

i am sure there are others, just need a minute or two to think about it. similar thing that happens with deniro. it cracks me up when people refer to him as 'bob' in interviews.

    housing is 42%

and we are only supposed to spend up to 30% on housing costs! well, that's affordable housing.

i love this nifty chart from the NYT. you can see how much the average American spends on different things and it gives a reflection of how much prices have gone up or down in the past year (given the percent change in what was spent).

click the link to see the interactive chart.

it takes money to draw attention to an issue
states are releasing prisoners early in order to ease their budgets :
"But the states' conversion to that view has less to do with a change of heart on crime than with stark fiscal realities. At a time of shrinking resources, prisons are eating up an increasing share of many state budgets."
