today’s quote
"The notion that 'family life' is an important dimension of the crime problem is also widespread, but has served primarily as a resource for advocates of the 'culture of welfare' explanation of 'underclass' behavior." - Katherine Beckett.

This quote represents a peek into the work I am doing. For example, a similar quote from myself: "Conservative movements have created get tough policies which increase imprisonment and harm offender's children in a multitude of ways. Among these are the aforementioned financial, emotional, educational and health burdens and the risk of intergenerational incarceration. It is interesting that it is conservative movements that advocate keeping the family together to minimize the harmful effects on children."

i've forgotten what silence is
i know we thought the same thing about computers, cell phones, PDAs, etc. but now i am wondering, how in the world did i ever live without an ipod?

adorable photo of the day #27

cute pic, with a bonus link.

i thought this pic was so adorable given that my cat loved the little ponies, too. for her, though, i think it was more a fascination with chewing on their plastic hair.

bonus link here.

not much of a sweet tooth
they ruled in texas that the three drug lethal injection cocktail does not violate the ban on cruel and unusual punishment. given this, executions resumed.

furthermore, this guy ordered the largest last meal in texas execution history.

a post, sitting in my inbox, waiting to happen
in Spain, two children ages 12 and 13, were recently admitted to a mental health center for cell phone addiction.

in this article, they don't recommend cellphones for children under 16. do you agree?

in other news, coffee may help you live longer.

if there is any truth to do this
then there's support for a biological explanation for persons who are gay.

right-wing christians, take that. sooner or later, something will pop up to make them shut up.

time for a quiz

Are You a Yankee or a Rebel?: 70% Dixie. A definitive Southern score!

via j-walk, who stated he had taken the test before and "turned" more southern. when i looked at the test, i realized i had, too, previously taken the test. turns out, i am more southern as well. in november 2005, i scored 58% dixie. i'm wondering if they have changed it somehow.

update: in writing this post, i noticed that the web addresses for the two were different. so i did compare the two tests, and no, it has not been changed. it's just me.

no news is good news
but what if all news was good news? click here.

promoting abstinence
given my last post, i thought this was fitting. Kmart is selling sweatpants for junior girls that promote abstinence, with the phrase "True Love Waits" on them. Kmart, however, says the pants have nothing to do with abstinence.

perhaps the phrase "True Love Waits" could be interpreted differently than promoting abstinence. in that case, one may agree with Kmart execs. but the description of the pants clearly states:
These athletic pants boldly proclaim just where she stands by pointing out that "True Love Waits" in a large screen print on the front and back of these pants.
further, the description calls the slogan a "bold abstinence screen print." someone is lying. and you know this is written across the butt of these pants. that's a nice place to display your abstinence views. [via]

the difference between 1957 and 2007
this is too funny. i was seriously laughing out loud. it's long, but i had to post it!

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
1957 - Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
2007 - School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
1957 - Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
2007 - Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

1957 - Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.

2007 - Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has affair with psychologist.

2007 - Police called, Mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.
1957 - Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
2007 - Pedro’s cause is taken up by state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro’s English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.
1957 - Ants die.
2007 - BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny’s Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

finally, official word
it is an historic moment. it would have been historic either way. and either way i am proud to witness it.

but - if obama doesn't beat mccain, the whole world will think we really are racist.

fire
