the end
here is a collection of 'the end' images from various movies.

for some reason, i find this interesting.

gitmo is closing, but what to do with those who call it 'home'
Guantanamo detainees to be held in supermax in CO? this is ludicrous. as is the outrage to Murtha's idea of bringing them to the US at all. i agree with Murtha. we already have a host of dangerous federal prisoners locked up in this country. but putting them into supermax, which is wrought with problems, seems harsh. these people have not yet been convicted of any crime.

surely, there is a better solution.

what do you think?

i know the new cast is to be younger, but these guys don't look human. i guess it is airbrushing. oh wait, only one of them is human anyway.

so, what do we think about the upcoming new star trek movie?

google maps
i found my house on streetview [and the flowers are on the balcony so the pic must have been taken in spring, but it's an old pic because the houses they tore down on the corner are still in the shot]. i didn't see my car in the parking lot, but eric's truck is there on the street.

update
well it has been bitterly cold round these parts. but no snow [despite the snow day on tuesday]. i am looking forward to a bit warmer weather.

in general, things are going pretty well. this semester is looking to be quite interesting and through the course of it i will be working to get a couple of papers published. a paper from last semester has been reworked and is well on its way to being submitted for publication. fingers crossed.

the inauguration was great to watch, i am glad to have shared that with my daughter. the oscar noms are coming out and i could care less.

selling your daughter
and then going to the police because of non-payment!
Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.
Police said they only learned of the deal after the 36-year-old man went to them to get his daughter back because payment wasn't made as promised. The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of human trafficking.
people are nuts.

texting maniac, indeed
a 13 year old girl in california is boasting about 14,528 text messages in one month. all those messages were listed on a statement than ran 440 pages long. according to the article, it works out to 484 text messages a day, or one every two minutes of every waking hour.

i wonder if the girl realizes that the phone can be used to talk.

himym photo shoot
these how i met your mother pics are great!

the cast reenacts some of the [arguably] best moments of last year.

HIMYM
the actors all now have pay raises. and after last night's episode, i can still say they deserve it.

tvsquad commented that their pay raises were such small potatoes (average $100,000 per episode) compared to charlie sheen's topping $825,000 for two and a half men. but that's okay. we're talking different shows and different situations. i'm sure these guys aren't hurting too bad with $100,000 per episode.

09-09-09
there are two movies named 'nine' that are coming out on sept. 9th. of course it is fitting.

neither movie looks interesting to me.

best jobs ... i'm in luck
completely assuming here, that criminology and sociology fare equally (in fact, many will tell you there is much more hope in crim than in soc): the 10 best jobs in america today includes sociologist at number eight.

the list suggests that academia is the way to go. my guess is that with fewer job opps available, school enrollment is promising.

also, no surprise that the worst jobs are what they are.

de-friend-ing
i read somewhere [in the context of social networking, like facebook, who just became a not-so-small country] a new word: defriend.

this is a word, according to the urban dictionary. defriending, however, seems silly.

it didn't take long for a local murder in the new year
this weekend a high school student was shot and killed here in norfolk.

there were 28 homicides in the city last year, compared with 49 in 2007, 28 in 2006 and 61 in 2005. other local cities have also had a decrease.

one can wonder what is on the horizion.

jokes
the kid sent me this. here's a snippet:

I knew a blonde that was so stupid that....
she called me to get my phone number.
she tried to drown a fish.
she tripped over a cordless phone.
when she heard that 90% of all crimes occur around the home, she moved.

this one i received a while ago:

There is a new study about women and how they feel about their asses; the results were pretty interesting:
30% of women think their ass is too fat ...
10% of women think their ass is too skinny ...
The remaining 60% say they don't care, they love him, he's a good man,
and they wouldn't trade him for the world.

ditto for this one: I love this Doctor.

Q: I've heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life; is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that 's it... don't waste them on exercise. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you & get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: Aren't fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU'RE NOT LISTENING!!!.... Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil. In fact, they're permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

getting back to it all
vacation's over. the kid went back to school.

i've been working on my spring class, syllabus, etc. the class is juvenile delinquency (not one of my favorites).

i just ordered hundreds of dollars in books for the classes i am taking.

i'm not ready.
