i remember this house
the house from Ferris Bueller's Day Off is for sale... it's going for a cool 2.3 million.

hey, it's 4 BR and 4 BA. and that awesome room where the car sped through the glass.

no smiling!
i am curious as to how well this will go over: states adopt 'no-smiles' policy for driver's licenses.

this is now the policy in AR, IN, NV and here in VA. it seems that a neutral facial expression can be matched with their new facial recognition software, but a smiling face causes difficulties. [via]

fewer and fewer people even have a home phone
i see commercials and whatnot for home telephone service that advertise unlimited local calling. haven't phone companies always given local calling without added cost?

20 years on tv
it seems that law and order [the original series] will be renewed for one more go, even if only to match the twenty seasons of gunsmoke.

this will keep my research current for another year.

bonus tv news: CBS has picked up Medium after NBC canceled it. i think i also heard that NBC was going to pick up Old Christine after CBS canceled it. wild.

fast food
i think these guys got lucky. my food looks even worse than this.

Fast Food: Ads vs. Reality: "Each item was purchased, taken home, and photographed immediately. Nothing was tampered with, run over by a car, or anything of the sort. It is an accurate representation in every case. Shiny, neon-orange, liquefied pump-cheese, and all."

via the internet
a joke for today: The Earth in balance.

God was missing for six days. Eventually, Michael, the archangel, found him, resting on the seventh day.

He inquired, “Where have you been?”
God smiled deeply and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds,
“Look, Michael. Look what I’ve made.”

Archangel Michael looked puzzled, and said, “What is it?”

“It’s a planet,” replied God, “and I’ve put life on it.. I’m going to call
it Earth and it’s going to be a place to test Balance.”

“Balance?” inquired Michael, “I’m still confused.”

God explained, pointing to different parts of earth. “For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth, while southern Europe is going to be poor. Over here I’ve placed a continent of white people, and over there is a continent of black people. Balance in all things.”

God continued pointing to different countries. “This one will be extremely hot, while this one will be very cold and covered in ice.”

The Archangel , impressed by God’s work, then pointed to a land area and said, “What’s that one?”

“That’s Washington State , the most glorious place on earth. There are beautiful mountains, rivers and streams, lakes, forests, hills, and plains. The people from Washington State are going to be handsome, modest, intelligent, and humorous, and they are going to travel the world. They will be extremely sociable, hardworking, high achieving, carriers of peace, and producers of software.”

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration, but then asked, “But what about balance, God? You said there would be balance.”

God smiled, “There’s another Washington. Wait till you see the idiots I put there.”

wikipedia experiment
i remember hearing about this a while ago, but wanted to share for those who are wikipedia-obsessed. there was a soc student in Dublin who altered a wikipedia page with false information to see how it would go in terms of newspaper reporting.

French composer Maurice Jarre died in March and it was widely reported that he said, “One could say my life itself has been one long soundtrack. Music was my life, music brought me to life, and music is how I will be remembered long after I leave this life. When I die there will be a final waltz playing in my head, that only I can hear.” this was the false entry the student created on wikipedia.

he wrote that fabricated line to see how journalists would use the information. and use it they did. i guess any college freshman can be a reporter.

"A full month went by and nobody noticed the editorial fraud. So Fitzgerald told several media outlets in an e-mail and the corrections began. 'I was really shocked at the results from the experiment...I am 100 percent convinced that if I hadn't come forward, that quote would have gone down in history as something Maurice Jarre said, instead of something I made up.'"

tv finale week
shows are ending this week and next. i don't care about much tv anymore, but oh my, Fringe is exciting!

i figured Walter was standing at his dead wife's grave, but no, it was Peter's! he was brought from the other side, after he was "lost." and i noticed that we didn't see the Mom's face in the pic Peter wiped the dust from in the beach house. maybe we will see Mom in the future in flashback form [actress yet uncast]. and the twin towers!

i am excited to see this show return in the fall.

ABCD*
ah, summer. i am happy to be done with classes. this does not, mean of course, that the work is over. in fact, i am still busy. hopefully soon, i will have another paper under review for publication, it's being submitted today. now it is time to begin work on the next paper...

all i can do is to keep on trucking.

thanks to google images

this is a sign i haven't seen before. i think it is interesting that they chose to write 'for tax evasion' on it. i wonder if this is to be a clue that the person has belongings that are worth coming to check out...

astroturfing
i was thinking the other day that if everything [as in products i see advertised on tv] is 'green,' then why can't everything just be green. this brings me to one commercial in particlar. the new Reynolds Wrap. the new wrap claims to be recycled and the packaging is green. and it is nothing more than a marketing ploy. it is already much cheaper to recycle aluminum foil than it is to mine it and it has been recycled since the 70s.

via badmomgoodmom: "At least for the last couple of decades, nearly all the aluminum in the US market is recycled. ... Whether you can buy the Reynolds or the store brand, you are buying recycled aluminum."

just recycle everything, call it like it is, and stop charging more for it.
