what a speech!
Virginia Delegate David Englin speaks his mind on gay rights and the marriage amendment.
I understand that on the issue of marriage, I’m in the minority, perhaps even in my own caucus. I also sleep very well at night knowing that at some point in the future of this great Commonwealth, those of us of my opinion will be judged to have been on the right side of history...you can read all of the speech here.
...So if this amendment doesn’t help protect my marriage, and doesn’t help protect my family, and if it doesn’t even change the status of same-sex marriage and civil unions and domestic partnership contracts, then what exactly does this amendment do? I submit to my fair-minded colleagues that this amendment sends a message. And that message is, if you are gay, or lesbian, or even a man and a woman living together and committed to each other who are not married, you are not welcome in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

gay marriage
I am quick sick of hearing about all the disputes over Same Sex Marriages. If you want to marry someone of the same sex, then do. If not, who cares, shut up about it. It is not 'taking anything away' from your heterosexual marriage. Religious nuts say that marriage is for sex and sex is supposed to be for procreation. They argue that if we are not using our 'complimentary capacities,' then it is an insult to God. Bologna. People stopped getting married just for sex a long time ago. And people stopped having sex just for procreation a long time before that.
If this Federal Marriage Amendment passes, changing the definition of marriage to specifically include the words 'man' and 'woman,' then I just might shoot myself. But, you know, it won't pass. There was a time when it was illegal for blacks to get married, and a time when it was illegal for interracial couples to marry, too. Society progressed to eradicate those laws. So, whatcha got Bush, I'm not scared. Oh wait, maybe a little.

interestingly, i had a conversation with a 12 year old yesterday that ended with my telling her i would buy a 'i support rainbow rights' bumper sticker if there was one.
"This is quite a surprise," said Daniel A. Smith, an associate professor of political science at the University of Florida. "In an ostensibly conservative state like Virginia, you'd expect to see the numbers up around 60 or 70 percent."yeah, but it's still enough to pass, should it come to that.

it's kinda fun when it's Cheney
Dick Cheney welcomes a new granddaughter. what a joyous time. maybe not for the parents, who live in VA. uh oh ... in Virginia, Heather Poe, Mary's partner, “will have no legal relationship with her child. She can’t adopt as a second parent. She won’t have her name on the birth certificate.”

pat robertson's heart attack
U.S. Rep. Ed Schrock (VA) abruptly announced his retirement late Monday, citing unspecified allegations that 'called into question my ability to represent the citizens of Virginia's 2nd Congressional District.'
the allegations? that he is gay. wowsers. Schrock is ranked by the National Journal as the second most conservative member of Congress and he cosponsored the Federal Marriage Amendment.

went to the stand up for equality rally that was held in norfolk today protesting the HB751 bill and the federal marriage amendment that is up in two weeks. it is always great to see so many people gathered around for a comon cause, especially one that is worthy. see more pics here.

A Message from John Saul
as part of the John Saul mailing list, i get updates on upcoming books from my favorite author. however, i got an email today that was quite different. in this email, John was asking for his readers to vote for Kerry. i can't believe it! here is a snippet:

one more thing: as a public service so close to the election, here are a thousand reasons to vote against Bush.
Mr. Bush, by his support for an amendment to the Constitution to forbid same sex marriage has made his position clear: he wants gay men and women to be made second class citizens of the United States. While it is true that Mr. Kerry does not support gay marriage, he has very publicly supported guaranteeing the same rights for domestic partners that married couples enjoy, and he is against using the Constitution to make all of us second class citizens.[read the entire email here].
