death to the SUV
could this have anything to do with rising gas prices?: Dealers Notice SUV Demand Dropping Off

lefties and cancer
the british medical journal recently published a study revealing that left-handed people may have an increased chance of developing premenopausal breast cancer. more than twice as likely.

why? previous studies have suggested that high levels of sex hormones before birth may cause left-handedness. it’s also thought that hormones can trigger changes in the breast tissue that make tumor growth more likely. all together, you see that left-handed people have twice the risk for breast cancer. interesting.

crime down for past 32 years
Violent and property crime rates in 2004 remained at the lowest levels since the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) first conducted its annual National Criminal Victimization Survey in 1973.

-- From 1993 through 2004, the violent crime rate fell 57 percent and the property crime rate declined by 50 percent.

-- Since 1993, a decline in violent crime victimization has occurred across every racial and ethnic group, and income level measured.

-- People who historically have been the most vulnerable to violent crime-males, blacks and youths-continued to be victimized at higher rates during 2004 than other resident groups, although all residents experienced lower criminal violence rates than those of prior years.

related post: crime is down, again. FYI, the june report, from the link, was from the UCR and this new report is from the NCVS. shows that crime is down by all accounts.

found somewhere out there
this awesome quiz: the sitcom door quiz

i scored an 84%. does that mean i watched too much tv?

then there's this.

[quiz] How Boyish or Girlish Are You?: You Are 60% Boyish and 40% Girlish
You are pretty evenly split down the middle - a total eunuch.
Okay, kidding about the eunuch part. But you do get along with both sexes.
You reject traditional gender roles. However, you don't actively fight them.
You're just you. You don't try to be what people expect you to be.
it doesn't sound good, either.

celebrate those curves
similiar to the new nike campaign, here's one from dove: real women have real curves.

and those women are beautiful.

it is great to see models look more like real women. but two things: they are still airbrushed and the campaign is for dove firming lotion. they choose women who look more real, but then still try to change [and firm] them. what??

digusting local news items
not in the gross sort of way, the terrible how-could-they-do-that sort of way.

i was wondering this just the other day
there's only four more names for hurricanes left for the year. what's next? they go greek.

summer heat
the summer's just about over. it has cooled off a bit, but the humidity is still gross here in virginia. the recap:
Norfolk's August average temperature of 80.1 degrees ranked the month as the ninth-warmest August in that city's record. Like Richmond's warmest August, Norfolk experienced its warmest in 1900.

Meanwhile, Norfolk's average high of 86.6 for August was only slightly above normal.

The 101 degrees Norfolk saw on July 27 was the Hampton Roads city's first 100-degree-or-higher reading since July 1995.
i did recently have a discussion that this past summer was not among the hottest that i can remember. officially, the ninth-warmest.

it sucks that we even need this chart
Find-A-Human -- IVR Phone System Shortcuts (USA)

it tells you how to talk to an operator instead of a computer for major companies. very handy.

[is it a holiday or not?],
but it is here. i guess our job is to remember.

oh, and there's football!

update: today was not a good day for football. curses to the redskins, cowboys, and the giants. i cannot believe they all won. kudos to new orleans though.

ready for lunch
i have spent the entire day making lunch. school lunches, that is. i have portioned out into snack-sized bags pretzels, pringles, teddy grahms, chex-mix type stuff we made on monday, raisins, carrots, and crackers.

i have a freezer full of individually wrapped per serving sandwiches, mini pizza bagels, meat and cheese roll-ups, hot dog salad*, and muffins.

the fridge is also stocked with small, kid-sized bottles of water, grapes, apples, and ranch dressing. hopefully making lunch at 7 am will be easier now.

when i can find a way to prepare PB & J in advance, it will be heaven.

* yes, you read correct. hot dog salad. since little missy won't eat tuna or chicken salad, this is the new invention.

How Machiavellian Are You?: You Are Somewhat Machiavellian
You're not going to mow over everyone to get ahead...
But you're also powerful enough to make things happen for yourself.
You understand how the world works, even when it's an ugly place.
You just don't get ugly yourself - unless you have to!

time for a laugh
this is too funny.

okay, i'm done after this
the katrina timeline will surely incite. it puts it all in perspective.

here's a guy who is criticizing an $8 million donation.

more government hand-outs (as i know some would say): the federal government will give out $2,000 to each adult victim. regardless of how you feel about it, these people need it.

and look at all the red cross has been up to help.

the good, the bad, and the ugly
deb has shared some good news for my coffee-addicted friend:
Coffee might soon be considered a health drink following a study showing it is a surprisingly rich source of anti-cancer agents.
A study has found that coffee contributes more antioxidants - which have been linked with fighting heart disease and cancer - to the diet than cranberries, apples or tomatoes.
bad news for bush. the world thinks he screwed up. or at least panicked.

the ugly? aside from going on more about the devestation down south, i don't have any ugly right about now. but there's something some people find ugly. not me, for the record. Nike has a new ad campaign. real women. butt, knees, and hips.

more on katrina
it's official. well, at least heard from an official. the death toll from Katrina is in the thousands.

the news is frightening. violence and looting. people eating corpses to stay alive. but why all this talk of race? 28% of people in new orleans live in poverty and 84% of those are black. 35 percent of black households didn't have a car, compared with just 15 percent of whites. without a car or money for a hotel, it's difficult or near impossible to evacuate. it's really not about race. it's about class. it just so happens that the majority of the poor are black.

the racial and class issues that have surfaced in the past few days have always been there. it just took a hurricane to show it to us all.

bush admits that federal relief efforts have been unacceptable. let's hope that there will be help for all very soon.

at least there are bars open.

God used the hurricane to purge wickedness
so says Rev. Bill Shanks, pastor of New Covenant Fellowship of New Orleans. He speaks of the good to come from Katrina.
New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion -- it's free of all of those things now. God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there -- and now we're going to start over again.
please.

hurricane katrina
yeah, i gotta say something.

reports of inside the Superdome: "A 2-year-old girl slept in a pool of urine ... Crack vials littered a restroom ... At least two people, including a child, have been raped. At least three people have died, including one man who jumped 50 feet to his death, saying he had nothing left to live for ... There is no sanitation. The stench is overwhelming ... There is feces all over the place."

someone has finally asked the question that has been on my mind: "Any idea where all our helicopters are?"

not to mention the fact that the cheapest gas i have seen here is 3.29 per gallon for regular. BTW- 91.77% of voters at pilotonline.com think the oil industry is price gouging on gasoline.

the bright side: Contributions Near $100 Million. do you think other countries will help out like with the tsuanmi?

you made it down here?

what? you want a reward?
